Electrical Resistivity

The use of aluminum and magnesium is increasing as the automotive industry focuses on reducing the overall weight of automotive body parts.

This trend introduces high electrical volume resistivity (EVR) specifications on rubber parts that come into contact with aluminum and magnesium to avoid contact corrosion problems. Additionally, automotive coolants and radiator hoses can have high electrical resistivity requirements to avoid issues associated with electrical chemical degradation.

We offer carbon blacks for automotive weather stripping and other applications with high EVR requirements from our SPHERON® product family, which is engineered for performance. SPHERON 6400 and 6400A, SPHERON 6000 and 6000A, and SPHERON 5200 carbon blacks offer an improved balance at a given high EVR in compound processability and application properties compared to typical American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) N500, N600 and N700 product morphologies used in automotive weather stripping today.

SPHERON 6400A and 6000A are carbon blacks from our SPHERON A series, which have very low amounts of impurities for excellent dispersion, reduced scrap rates and Class A surface finishes when compared with standard ASTM-type semi-reinforcing carbon blacks.

Product Name Product Description Datasheet SDS
SPHERON® 5200

SPHERON® 5200 carbon black offers rubber reinforcement properties similar to SPHERON® 5000 carbon black but with greater electrical resistivity for avoiding electrical chemical degradation in radiator hoses or contact corrosion problems in applications in contact with aluminum and magnesium metal parts such as window profiles.

SPHERON® 6000

A carbon black with high electrical resistivity, excellent dynamic, dispersion and extrusion characteristics with high carbon black loading. It is recommended for industrial rubber applications requiring very low hysteresis, such as automotive engine mounts and drive belts.

SPHERON® 6000A

A carbon black with very high cleanliness, high electrical resistivity, excellent dispersion and extrusion characteristics with high carbon black loading. It is used in class A automotive weather stripping, extruded profiles and radiator hose applications.

SPHERON® 6400

A carbon black with very high electrical resistivity, excellent dispersion and extrusion characteristics with high carbon black loading. It is the product of choice for rubber parts that are in contact with aluminum and magnesium metal car body parts and require very high electrical resistivity.

SPHERON® 6400A

A carbon black with very high cleanliness, high electrical resistivity, excellent dispersion and extrusion characteristics with high carbon black loading. It is recommended for class A automotive weather stripping that is in contact with aluminum and magnesium metal car body parts and require very high electrical resistivity.
